Dear Readers,

I hope the New Year finds you well so far.  There’s so much potential in the future, and I for one, am hopeful and excited.

I decided it was time to write a new “About Me” page because  1)  this isn’t a personal blog anymore; 2)  my original one was boring.  I am leaving it attached to this page because of the sweet comments I’d received on it.

Ok I’ll hop to it and let you know what’s going on with me, and tell you more about me.

My name’s Shannon, I’m 40-something (actually one year away from the big 5-0).  Yuck.  I was born and raised in Southern California, Ventura to be exact.  I grew up playing and fighting with my baby sister and my cousins.  Boy oh boy could I tell you some stories.  But that may be something I do later.

I was raised by my mom but consider myself very lucky that I was allowed to see and have a relationship with my dad, and my wonderful stepmom.  I love them both dearly, although Daddy went to Heaven in December of ’04.  He died of lung cancer.  He was a Vietnam Vet.

Elementary, junior high, high school.  I did pretty well as far as grades go throughout my student career.  Athough the older I got, the more rebellious I became, and the more trouble I got into.  Don’t get me wrong; I’ve always had a good heart and compassion for others.  Some of my favorite things to do when I was a was a kid was read, color, draw, and play foursquare, twosquare, tetherball, and the monkey bars.

After high school, I left home with my high school sweetheart and stayed gone for six years. Whole nuther chapter for another day!  Then I moved back home, got married, got divorced, blah blah blah. Moved to Missouri, then Denver, then back to Missouri, then back to Southern California.  I remarried in 2002, got divorced 3 months later, then remarried the same guy five years later.  We’re still together this time.  What a rollercoaster that was!

There’s so much to say, but as far as my interior decorating and art go, I’ve always liked to decorate my home. When I was a little girl my sister and I used to swap furniture, haha! I’ve always been drawn to color, and another thing I like are curved lines. Hard, straight angles just don’t do it for me. But I’m off on another subject. I tend to do that because I’m a bit scatter-brained (at least that’s what my Mom wrote it my baby book).

My husband and I bought an awesome Spanish-style home in Bakersfield in 2008. It was my first home and I was in love with it. Sad story, we lost it. She was a Spanish beauty, and my pride and joy. I’d always wanted to be a homeowner you see. I felt like I had accomplished something.

That’s when I started watching HGTV. I was hooked, more like obsessed. I’ve learned so much from that channel and I think owning my first home and HGTV are what fueled my desire to create beautiful spaces. I love doing my own, but I’ve always been a “helper”. So combining my “design nerd” self and my “helper” self works out great for the career I’ve chosen.

It’s been a struggle trying to figure out how to blog, do marketing stuff, etc. But I’m doing it, with a lot of mistakes but that’s ok. That’s how a person learns.

As far as my art goes, I’m an amateur and self-taught artist. I absolutely love to throw some paint around. It doesn’t matter whether it’s on a canvas or a wall, there’s just something hypnotizing about the glossy, smelly, liquidy flow of paint. LOL! Bet y’all think I’m a nut case now but I’m not, really!

If you want to ask me something, holler at me and I’ll answer if I can. Oh yeah, you must know that I’m a HUMONGOUS animal lover. Yes, yes and yes! We have two dogs, four cats, and two ferals that we trapped, got fixed, feed, and consider ours. Welcome to my home.

Howdy y’all. Guess I needed to tell you a little bit about myself, so here it is. Animal lover, new artist dabbling in just about everything and, an interior decorator. Married to my best friend, who also happens to drive me nuts half the time, with two dogs and four cats; six if you count the two strays that hang out in our garage. Born and raised in Southern California in a beach town; but for some reason I prefer fresh water, mountains and pine trees. My background is office work in a bunch of different fields and industries. Hoping someday to change that. Crazy family that I love dearly, and the coolest friends. There’s more but for now those are the basics. I’m pretty sure more will trickle out as time rolls along.

  1. Thanks for following my blog! I am so glad that I stopped by yours–loving the photos! I’m from California as well. What I love most about SoCal is the diversity in landscape and ecology. Though I prefer the ocean, I love going camping near a river once in a while.

Though I don’t have experience in interior design, I try to make my home look as though I am a professional. Not easy on tiny budgets!

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your posts in the future.

  2. Hi Donna. This is Shannon from SERreal Designs on Facebook and Twitter. I thought you would recognize me but obviously I wasn’t thinking, my apologies.

It does sound like we have a lot in common, which is very cool because sometimes I feel unconnected on the Internet, haha.

I love your posts and have been following you for awhile. Thank you for reading my “About” page. That was really hard to do for some reason!

I created this blog just so I could put my ramblings to the paper so to speak.

  3. Wow Ajayla, I just got chills as I read your ABOUT post. It’s very much like my blog COFFEE & BACON that I recently started. I have Interior Design (my job) blogs of course but this one is created just for me to vent.

I also have 4 cats. I was also born and raised in a beach town, Long Island, but will take a cabin in the woods any day over the sandy beach.

I look forward to knowing more about you, I see we have a lot in common. If you’d like to find out more about me, please visit DecoratingbyDonna.com and see. Oh and thanks again for sharing my blog post this morning.
